Update on Northside Cat Trapping “Firecracker Cats”

A story of 3 feeders, 4 trappers, 1 foster home/rescue, 1 fundraiser, and 10? community #cats in need of help in Pittsburgh’s Mexican War Streets.

Neighbor spotted a kitten, called us, we called for reinforcements. They brought traps, trail cameras, plans, bait, maps, and determination.

On July 4, they trapped two kittens & their Siamese mix mama. On July 5, they trapped another kitten. He has a different Siamese mix mama and two siblings. He had been darting around the trappers like the curious kid from up the block. Trappers followed him and found his mom and siblings.

July 6, three different shifts of trappers went out. The last one was able to trap Old Tom who squeezed himself into a kitten trap! He is in really rough shape and will be headed to Urgent Care Vet on Wednesday.

Mama #2 was circling the feeding area, but she must have stashed her kittens somewhere because they are nowhere to be seen.

Papa is a gorgeous tuxedo. He may be a player and have two families about a week apart. He strolled around last night.

So these cats know where the food is and hopefully the trappers can outlast them in this waiting game.

The trappers are amazing. They are out there for hours in 90 degree heat on full alert. Then they have challenges like relocating an adult injured cat from a kitten trap to an adult trap. Or trying not to trap mama before her kittens.

The feeders are amazing. They visit the base location multiple times with fresh water, clean dishes, and food. One has a broken toe so she recruited her husband. Another went up and cleared out vines, weeds, and debris for a drop trap. They are invested in the outcome.

There’s also random sighting of another dark adult cat.

So that’s five cats trapped so far, five to go. One mama, three male kittens, and one male adult.
