Trans and Queer Media Project

Why worry about paywalls?

Supporting research into missing, murdered, and unclaimed trans and queer folx. This project funds access to local media to ensure accurate and fair coverage as well as amplifying information to the larger community. This is a partnership with the Trans Violence News, TransDoe Task Force, GLAAD, and independent researchers. To request access to a paywalled outlet, contact folx@pghlgbtq.org

Honoring the lives and memorializing the deaths of victims of anti-trans violence is something that the trans community has charged us to do – to ensure visibility, to seek justice, to offer comfort.

Searching for missing trans and queer youth – those who runaway, those who flee, those who are trafficked – is very difficult, especially given the even more constrained resources from the federal government.

There’s a unique sadness to the unknown stories of our trans and queer neighbors whose bodies are not identified or claimed after death.

Our project has identified one key gap in this work – the costs of media paywalls. It is imperative that researchers across the board have access to local newspaper archives, current reporting and the journalists creating the content. As paid subscribers, we can forge connections and track the coverage. Partners like GLAAD can work on the media content. Others like the Trans Doe Task Force can help with unidentified fatalities.

We can often subscribe for a limited amount of time, maximizing your investment.
